CPC50220 – Diploma of Building and Construction (Building)
Qualification Overview
This qualification is intended for professionals in the building industry who are responsible for applying their knowledge in areas such as structural principles, financial and risk management, cost estimating, and managing building contracts. It also includes selecting and supervising contractors, ensuring work quality, and overseeing the construction process for both residential and commercial projects within the following limitations:
- Residential: National Construction Code (NCC) Class 1 and 10 buildings, up to a maximum height of three storeys
- Commercial: NCC Class 2 to 9 buildings, limited to Type C and Type B construction
Possible occupational outcomes include:
- Builder
- General Foreperson
- Building Inspector
- Construction manager
The construction sector places high importance on delivering training and assessment in environments that closely replicate real-world conditions. Therefore, to complete this qualification, students must have access to an active construction site to meet the performance criteria outlined in the unit CPCCBC4008 – Supervise communication and administration processes for building and construction projects.
In accordance with the Model Code of Practice for Construction Work, individuals undertaking construction activities must complete a general induction training course. This requirement is fulfilled by completing the unit CPCCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry.
Please note that builder licensing requirements differ between Australian states and territories, and additional criteria may apply beyond this qualification.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have completed Year 12 or its equivalent in Australia
- Possess 1–2 years of relevant work experience or skills in the construction industry
Eligible domestic students include:
- Australian citizens
- Australian permanent residents
- New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
- Temporary residents of Australia (excluding student visa holders)
- Individuals holding a partner visa
All students must:
- Successfully complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) test at Level 4
- Be competent in CPCCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
Technology Requirements
Students are expected to have their own device with the following minimum specifications:
Hardware:
- Processor: 2.5–2.9 GHz
- RAM: 8 GB
- Storage: 100 GB
Operating System:
- Windows 10 (version 1809 or above) or Windows 11
- OR macOS Monterey (v12), Ventura (v13), or Sonoma (v14)
Additional requirements:
- Built-in or USB webcam
- Microphone and speakers/headset suitable for video conferencing
- Device capable of taking photos or scans (e.g., smartphone)
- Access to a modern web browser (Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Safari)
- Use of Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.)
Qualification Structure
To obtain this qualification, students must complete 27 units of competency, which include:
- 24 core units
- 3 elective units
One of the elective units may be selected from any current training package or accredited course, provided it contributes meaningfully to the intended vocational outcome, aligns with the AQF level, and does not duplicate existing units.
